Turnip Green Soup

1/3 of a 16-oz. bag of dried baby lima beans
6 small turnips with the greens
8 cups water
3 strips cooked bacon
2 medium onions, chopped
1/2 cup tasso, slivered
1 1/2 cups ham, chopped or slivered
Salt and pepper to taste

Cover beans with water and bring to a boil on stovetop. Turn off heat and let sit for an hour. Drain.

Put drained beans in slow cooker with 8 cups water.

Peel and chop turnips to bite-size pieces and place in slow cooker. Fry bacon, drain and put into slow cooker. Sauté onions in same pan until limp but not brown. Add to slow cooker.

Add tasso and ham. Cook on High for about 5 hours or until beans are tender.

*Use 6-quart slow cooker for this recipe.

Yields 8 servings.
