Baked French Onion Soup

4 lg. onions, sliced
Pinch of sugar
1 tbsp. flour
3 cans chicken broth
1 1/2 cans water
1 beef bouillon cube
Toasted French bread
Mozzarella or provolone cheese, sliced

Saute onions in kettle with small amount of butter. Add a pinch of sugar and flour. Add broth, water, bouillon cube and small clove of garlic (or several dashes of garlic powder). Cook. At serving time, ladle soup into individual bowls. Top with a slice of toasted French bread and a slice of cheese. Place under broiler until cheese begins to bubble. Carefully remove and let cool slightly, cheese will be hot.
