Bean Soup

1 lb. navy soup beans
1 tsp. baking soda
1 large onion cut in pieces
1 lb. bulk sausage
1 qt. can of tomatoes


Soak the navy beans overnight. In the morning, bring them to a boil. Add the baking soda and let boil for a minute or two. Pour through a colander. Put beans back into kettle and add fresh water to cover. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil and then simmer until beans are tender. Add salt to taste.
