Cabbage and Potato Soup

2 teaspoons vegetable oil
4 cups shredded green cabbage
1 cup sliced onions
1 garlic clove -- minced
3 cups water
6 ounces potato -- peeled, sliced
1/2 cup sliced carrot
1/2 cup tomato puree
4 packets instant beef broth and seasoning mix
1 bay leaf
1 dash ground allspice or 1 whole cloves

In 2-quart saucepan heat oil; add cabbage, onions, and garlic and saute over medium heat, stirring frequently, until cabbage is soft, about 10 minutes. Reduce heat to low and add remaining ingredients; cook until vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes. Remove and discard bay leaf and clove before serving.
