Creamy French Onion Soup

2 c. thinly sliced sweet onions
1 stick butter or margarine
1/4 c. flour
4 c. milk
1 1/2 to 2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
4 slices French bread
Grated Parmesan cheese
Grated Swiss cheese

Saute' onions in butter or margarine in large saucepan over low heat 20 to 30 minutes. Cover with lid. After onions are tender, add flour, salt and pepper. Stir over medium heat until bubbly. Remove from heat. Gradually add milk. Bring to boil. Remove from heat. When ready to serve pour into crocks, sprinkle cheese mixture over bread slice and place in broiler until cheese is melted. Serves 4.
