French-canadian Pea Soup

1 lb. split peas
1/2 lb. piece of ham or pork shoulder
6 c. water
Cooked turnip; optional
Salt and pepper, pepper, pepper . . .


Soak peas in cold water overnight. Strain peas, cover with clean water, bring to a boil and strain again. Add 6 cups of water and other ingredients and bring to a boil. Simmer several hours, adding water as needed.
